Portugal Lose Fernandes for Norway Test as Midfielder Focuses on Recovery

Portugal Lose Fernandes for Norway Test as Midfielder Focuses on Recovery Portugal will face Norway without captain Bruno Fernandes after the Manchester United midfielder was ruled out of Sunday’s Nations League encounter following a fitness concern. Fernandes’ absence comes after he was taken off towards the closing stages of Portugal’s 1–0 victory over Wales in Lisbon. The midfielder had reportedly been dealing with discomfort before the game, and the latest setback has now forced Portugal to leave one of their most influential players out of the trip to Oslo. Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus confirmed that Fernandes had been carrying the problem through recent matches and was not operating at his best against Wales. The decision to leave him out was made with Fernandes’ longer-term fitness in mind. Rather than expose the Manchester United captain to a more serious problem, Portugal have opted to give him time to recover before their next Nations League assignment. Jesus is hopeful that Fernandes can return for Thursday’s meeting with Denmark in Copenhagen, although that will depend on how the midfielder responds during his recovery. Heavy workload for Manchester United captain Fernandes has had a demanding start to the new campaign with Manchester United. The 31-year-old has played every minute of the club’s first five Premier League fixtures this season and has also been involved in their European and domestic cup commitments. He completed the entire 4–0 Champions League victory over Sabah before later appearing from the bench in Manchester United’s Carabao Cup encounter with Brighton. His workload has been accompanied by important contributions in front of goal. Fernandes produced one of his most impressive performances of the campaign when he scored three times during United’s 5–2 league victory over Ipswich. That result remains Manchester United’s only Premier League win of the campaign so far. Norway clash loses Fernandes-Haaland angle Fernandes’ withdrawal also removes one of the intriguing individual battles from Sunday’s fixture. Norway will have Erling Haaland leading their attack, while Fernandes would ordinarily have been expected to play a major role in Portugal’s midfield. Haaland has already had a decisive encounter with Manchester United this month. The striker scored the winning goal when Manchester City defeated United 1–0 in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford. Portugal must now prepare for Norway without their captain as they look to secure another positive Nations League result. United monitoring situation Fernandes’ condition will also be of interest to Manchester United, particularly with the club's domestic schedule continuing after the international break. United, managed by Michael Carrick, are due back in Premier League action on October 10 against Tottenham. The extended gap before that fixture could give Fernandes additional recovery time, although his immediate target is likely to be a return to Portugal duty against Denmark if medical assessments allow him to play. For now, Portugal will have to find a way to cope without their captain in Oslo, while Fernandes concentrates on recovering fully rather than risking a worsening of the problem. Virgin Times News
